A LuminusOS project · GNOME 50

GNOME, extended.

Aurora Shell adds optional modules to GNOME Shell, including a dock, tray icons, clipboard history and per-application volume controls.

Latest version: v50.9 · GNOME Shell 50 · GPL-3.0

Designed for upstream

“Aurora modules are developed independently while they mature. Features that fit GNOME Shell may later be proposed upstream.”

In the spotlight

A selection of modules included with Aurora Shell.

Dock

Adaptive dock

A dock on every monitor that can hide around windows, reveal from the screen edge or remain fixed. It also supports Trash and removable drives.

Clipboard History

Searchable clipboard history

Search copied items, pin entries and navigate from the keyboard. Clipboard history remains on the local machine.

Volume Mixer

Every app at its own volume

Per-application sliders right inside Quick Settings. Turn the game down without touching the music, and jump to Sound Settings when you need more.

Weather & Meeting Clock

Weather and meetings in the panel

Show current weather and upcoming calendar events beside the clock, with meeting alerts and snooze controls.

Tray Icons

Tray and background app icons

Display SNI tray icons and GNOME background apps in the panel while deduplicating repeated entries.

The modules

Twenty-two independent modules, in four groups. Toggle each one in preferences.

Dock & Panel

Dock

Replaces the stock dash with a per-monitor dock: intellihide, edge reveal, always-visible mode, Trash and drive shortcuts.

Aurora Menu

A panel menu with recent items, useful shortcuts, a configurable icon and a custom command slot.

Power Menu Avatar

Shows the current user's avatar and name in the power menu.

Volume Mixer

Per-application volume sliders right in Quick Settings, with fast access to Sound Settings.

Low Battery Percentage

Shows the native battery percentage automatically while discharging below 20%.

Lock Key Indicators

Caps Lock and Num Lock indicators in the top panel.

Bluetooth Menu

Tray Icons

Shows SNI icons and GNOME background apps while removing duplicate entries.

Appearance

Theme Changer

Keeps GNOME light/dark color-scheme behavior consistent across the system.

Icon Weave

Fixes missing app icons by matching untracked windows to their apps, in memory.

App Search Tooltip

Shows app names on hover in the overview search results.

Auto Theme Switcher

Switches between light and dark theme automatically at the times you set.

Behavior

Skip Overview on Login

Boot straight to your desktop. Skips the overview on startup.

PiP On Top

Keeps Picture-in-Picture windows above everything else, automatically.

Focus Launched Windows

Focuses newly launched windows instead of “is ready” notifications.

Capture Tools

Adds annotation tools and optional local OCR to GNOME's screenshot interface.

XWayland Indicator

Adds an X11 badge to XWayland apps in the Alt+Tab switcher.

Vela VPN Quick Settings

Routes VPN activation in Quick Settings through Vela, with an optional GNOME Shell fallback.

Privacy & Clipboard

Privacy

Screen-sharing privacy: automatic Do Not Disturb and panel content hiding.

Clipboard History

Searchable clipboard history with pinning, keyboard navigation and a shortcut you assign. Everything stays local.

Implementation

Independent modules

Each feature has its own enable and disable lifecycle and can be turned off independently.

TypeScript, tested

Written in TypeScript with unit tests for the logic and integration tests against a real headless GNOME Shell.

Privacy-first

Module data stays on the local machine and is not sent to third parties.
